A Guide to San Diego-Imperial Council’s Leader Training


The San Diego-Imperial Council offers many different training sessions to enable unit leaders to provide the best possible program to the youth members of the Boy Scouts of America. Trainings are listed within each program type. Contact your District Training Chair, the Council Service Center, or the Council Website (http://www.sdicbsa.org/) for a calendar of training available in your area.


GENERAL TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Youth Protection Guidelines:

Also known as "YPG", this training is intended for all leaders. It reviews the youth protection policies. Our Council requires it of any leader in order to obtain a Tour Permit. It is to be renewed every three years. (1.5 hrs)

Fast Start Training:

Video training designed to be used at the point of recruiting to familiarize new leaders with their basic job responsibilities. This video is an introduction to Scouting and should be followed with basic training as soon as possible. This training is available for all programs within the Boy Scouts of America. (1.5 hrs)

New Leader Essentials:

This is the initial training for all adult leaders. Leaders learn about the aims of the Scouting program and the methods used to achieve these aims. They also gain a basic understanding of youth development, how Scouting is organized and financed, policies related to the program, and resources to help leaders succeed. (1.5 hrs)

Chartered Organization Representative Training:

Designed to assist the chartered organization representative understand their important role within the Boy Scouts of America. (2 hrs)

Roundtable:

A monthly supplemental training held to enhance leader skills. There are roundtables held throughout the Council for each program. (1.5 hrs)

Trainer Development Conference:

This course is designed to provide ideas and training skills along with the latest principles, methods, and techniques to all Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, Venturing, District, and Council trainers. (8 hrs)

Wood Badge:

The Boy Scouts of America’s premier advanced training in leadership theory and team development. Wood Badge is designed for all leaders from every program in Scouting. (6 days)

Philmont Conferences (by invitation only):

A variety of conferences are offered for the leaders who are selected to receive invitations to this training center located in New Mexico. (1 week)


CUB SCOUT PROGRAM TRAINING

Cub Scout Leader Specific Training: An intensive overview providing job/position related information to Cub Scout Leaders. Specific training is offered to the Cubmaster and Assistants; Pack Committee Chair and Members; Tiger Cub Den Leaders; Cub Scout Den Leaders and Assistants; and Webelos Dent Leaders and Assistants. (3 hrs)

Updates: Supplemental training held quarterly. A series of six supplemental training opportunities for both new and more experienced leaders, which expands on subjects that are only covered briefly in basic training and also provides in-depth information on new topics. (2 hrs)

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO): This training provides a hands-on learning experience designed to give leaders the outdoor skills and planning techniques they need to conduct age-appropriate parent-son overnight camping with their packs. (8 hrs)

Webelos Leader Outdoor Training: A session that is conducted in an outdoor setting where Webelos Den Leaders will receive information on the outdoor skills they will need in working with Webelos Scouts. (length may vary)

Webelos Activity Badge Workshop: A supplemental training for Webelos Den Leaders designed to focus on the various activity badges.

Den Leader Workshop: A supplemental training for Den Leaders usually designed as a hands-on workshop. (>3 hrs)

Cubmaster Workshop: A supplemental training that touches on a variety of topics including ceremonies, costumes, and pack meeting pizzazz. (>3 hrs)

Pack Administration Workshop: A supplemental training intended for all pack leaders. It is designed to focus on the operations of the pack. (>3 hrs)

Pow Wow: An annual, daylong conference for all Cub Scout leaders offering many varied classes that provide additional information on activities and program ideas.

Cub Leader Outdoor Experience (CLOE): A supplemental training held in an outdoor setting. Designed to assist leaders in become more comfortable with outdoor adventures. (2 days)

Den Chief Conference: A meeting of Den Chiefs and prospective Den Chiefs designed to combine a good time with training. Cubmasters, Webelos Den Leaders, Cub Scout Den Leaders, and other pack or troop leaders who register Den Chiefs in the conference should arrange to participate with them. (6 hrs)

Boy Scout Program

Junior Leader Training Conference (JLTC): The highest-level youth leader training available in our council. It helps youth with developing good leadership skills. (1 week)

Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training: This training has three sessions designed to provide leaders with a good working knowledge of troop operations. The three sessions are: Role of the Scoutmaster in a Boy-Led Troop; The Outdoor Program and the Advancement Program; and Program Planning and Troop Administration. The course may be held in one session or broken into three 3 hours sessions.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills: This course is a hands-on training program to give adult leaders the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the Outdoors. Imagine having hands-on knowledge about setting up a campsite, pitching a tent, hiking, outdoor cooking - all the skills necessary to see the outdoor program of the Boy Scouts of America come to life. The course is a day and a half long.

Troop Committee Training: The Troop Committee Challenge - Boy Scout Troop Committee Training is a three-hour course for members of the troop committee. It is designed to help troop committee members better understand their roles and responsibilities through interactive learning.

Den Chief Training: A meeting of den chiefs and prospective den chiefs designed to combine a good time with training. Cubmasters, Webelos den leaders, den leaders and other adult pack or troop leaders who register den chief in the conference who should arrange to participate with them. (6 hrs)

Show N'Do: A one-day training activity for both adults and scouts, where adults demonstrate a variety of scout specialties.

Merit Badge Counselor Orientation: This training helps a merit badge counselor understand their job as a coach and counselor, who provides realistic learning experiences to a Scout in his study of a merit badge subject.

Varsity Program

Varsity Leader Specific Training: This training describes the purposes and methods of the Varsity Scouting program, reviews Varsity's five program fields of emphasis, and gives details about how to plan and conduct team activities and meetings (3 hrs)

Venturing Program

Venturing Leader Specific Training: This training is designed to introduce adult Venturing leaders to the basic information needed for operating a crew. This includes (1) Here's Venturing, (2) Understanding and Protecting Youth, (3) Leadership and Organization, (4) Advancement, and (5) Resources and Program Planning. (8 hrs)

Crew/Ship Officers' Seminar: This training experience is conducted by the Advisor/Skipper to orient newly elected youth officers, plan programs, and develop annual crew/ship activities.

Venturing Leadership Skills Course: This training is designed to be run by the Advisor and officers to teach leadership skills to the entire crew. Completion of the course is required for the youth Silver Award.

Sea Badge: An advanced weekend training conference for Sea Scout Leaders that is conducted on a regional basis or region approved council invitational basis.

Powder Horn: Powder Horn Training is a training opportunity designed to expose the Venturing or Boy Scout leader to activities and resources necessary to operate a successful Venturing Ranger Award or Troop High Adventure program. This training includes six days of instruction.

High Adventure Program

High Adventure Leader Trek Training (HALTT): A course designed to prepare adult unit leaders for backpacking trips and wilderness camping trips. Topics include trek planning, equipment, food, health and safety, orienteering, and places to go. (3 sessions)

High Adventure Water Trek Training: A course to prepare adult leaders for trips on flat and moving water. Topics include trip planning, water safety, and canoe handling. (4 sessions, the first 2 are shared with HALTT)

Specialist Training: A course to prepare adult leaders in areas beyond the basic trek training. Desert backpacking, snow camping, technical rock climbing, cycle trekking, equipment making, search and rescue, orienteering skills are some of the topics offered. (6 sessions)

Unit Backpack Training: A course to teach basic backpacking to scouts accompanied by their leaders. (1 weekend)

Trail Building: A course to teach trail construction and maintenance to adult leaders and their scouts. (1 to 4 days)
